When it comes to activism, Comrade Shehu Sani has seen it all. For his role in resisting military dictatorship and insisting on a return to civil rule, Comrade Sani was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1994, following a kangaroo trial by a military tribunal under late dictator, General SaniAbacha. After four years in Abacha’s gulag, he was released in 1998 by the regime of AbdulsalamiAbubakar. Before then, Sani was detained many times by earlier military regimes, including that of former military president, Ibrahim Babangida. He therefore did time in several Nigerian prisons, including those of Kirikiri, Port Hacourt, Kaduna, and Aba. But in spite of the continuing, considerable risk to his person, Sani has remained an indefatigable, steadfast defender of democracy and fundamental human rights. With the heightening of bomb attacks by the Boko Haram sect in different parts of the country in the last two years, especially in the northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, Comrade ShehuSani took it upon himself to broker peace between the sect and the government of Nigeria. In this regard, he facilitated the talks between former President OlusegunObasanjo and some family members of several Boko Haram leaders in September 2011.
